"There's Love on Every Pillow"

One of my first tangible memories with you,

is the Monday morning when you taught me how to put on a pillow case

 in the eyelet tower that stung the eyes.

Those hand motions wordlessly communicated that you had a very particular way of occupying space,

even when placing a polyester barrier over the protector of my imagination.

You always perceived pillows as sacred,

never to touch the ground, never to be seen by others who wouldn't typically be around to guard my dreams.

And never to be stacked so high that my broken bones would fall to the concert hall below. 

On the day I moved away,

you passed those same pillows over the oak threshold.

 And as I traveled to a kingdom of my own, I quickly forgot your hand motions

and displayed those pillows for one and all to occupy.

How quickly I also learned that these rules I once saw as constraints should have been continually recited,

as I woke up one morning in my early twenties and realized that the four pillows you had given me were nowhere to be found.

They were long lost in the bed of another who never cared to understand their importance.

 Sometimes I still wonder where those pillows ended up.

 Some days I wish they might show up at my front door.

They would be a little tattered and a little less white, but I could look past that

because you taught me how to imagine love on those pillows.

 Perhaps I can properly learn one day if I see enough eyelet.

 But until then I will continue searching and pretending

that there's love on every pillow.
